our HISTORY

We didn’t start making gelato yesterday, we’ve been doing it for nearly 100 years! It’s our passion and we are extremely proud of our history.

1900

In 1900 Jack Nugent is born in the sea side town of Newcastle, Co. Down. Jack sails to America seeking work opportunities. In 1928, The ice-cream dream all started when he receives a letter from his mother asking him to come home and start a business. Jack had a dream of making ice-cream and spent a year perfecting his recipe.

1930

Jack and his family open the Strand Ice cream Parlour and Home Bakery. At that time Jack was the first non-Italian to perfect the art of making Ice-cream in Ireland and the tradition of ice-cream making passed through the family to Michael Senior.

1937

we received our first award in 1937 from the UK Ice cream Association.

1984

Michael Nugent Junior is born in Newcastle, Co. Down. At a young age, Michael is introduced to the ice-cream industry by his father when he makes ice-cream at the weekends and during university. Michael had a dream to start a different type of ice-cream experience inspired by his travels to Italy and around the world. Michael added to the family recipes and wrote the recipes that make Nugelato® famous.

2015 newcastle

Nugelato® opened its first Ice cream Boutique in Newcastle Co. Down in May, 2015 and the now Famous Nuggy Pot® was born. Nugelato® was created to be the BEST ice cream experience in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

2016 newry

THE NUGGYPOT WAS BECOMING A SOUGHT AFTER PRODUCT. Nugelato® Icecream Boutique opened a second store in Newry, Co. Down.

2017

We introduced the Nuggy burrito or brrr-ito! OUR DELICIOUS ICECREAM AND GOODIES ALL WRAPPED UP IN A FRESHLY MADE CREPE. we also increased our production capabilities to enable us to open more Nugelato® Icecream Boutiques.

2018 bangor

We opened our third store in Bangor, the fabulous seaside town in county down

2019 stranmillis, belfast

our fourth store opened in stranmillis village in the heart of the student area in belfast, near to the fantastic titanic belfast attraction.

2020 portadown

We opened our fifth and sixth stores this year during the covid pandemic. Our churreria in Newcastle opened in June and was closely followed by our sixth store in portadown, co. Armagh.

2021 cookstown

our Seventh store opened in Cookstown in the heart of mid ulster. we combined with centra dunmans fabulous new project and brand new location to have our first store within a store.

2021 kilkeel

we opened our eighth store in kilkeel, the wonderful fishing village deep in the kingdom of mourne. this collaboration with the famous herron’s cfc brought the perfect combination of dinner and dessert to the fine mourne folk.

2021 bfa accreditation

IN NOVEMBER 2021 OUR FRANCHISE MODEL WAS ACCREDITED BY THE BRITISH FRANCHISE ASSOCIATION. THIS WAS A VERY IMPORTANT MILESTONE FOR NUGELATO AS IT DEMONSTRATED THAT NUGELATO IS A SUSTAINABLE AND ETHICAL BUSINESS FORMAT FRANCHISE.

2022 crumlin Road, Belfast

our 10th outlet opened in january in north belfast. The nugelato concession concept was a perfect fit for the wall group’s brand new eurospar on the crumlin road. a state of the art new store which is a fantastic addition to the community, with a bonus of serving luxurious nugelato ice cream.

2022 andersonstown, belfast

OUr 11th store opened in the heart of west belfast on the andersonstown road. our newcastle store has so many great customers from the area and we were delighted when tracey and darren wanted to bring nugelato to their home. the store is just down the road from casement park and it is also perfectly placed opposite the fantastic leisure centre it provides the perfect post swim treat.
